I had an experience recently where I was forced to enjoy a show with no cameras or phones allowed. At first, I was bummed because I'm definitely a "photos or it didn't happen" person. But I was able to enjoy the show so much more without thinking about filming it. I even got upset when the person next to me broke the rules and turned their phone on to video the show. Not because they broke the rules, but because the light in the dark room distracted from the experience and hurt my eyes. They stole my moment of luxury.
Thanks Alicia. Yeah I’ve been in your shoes as well as been the dumbo who turned his dumb phone in dim light. But nowadays I’m more conscious of it not just at shows but also in restaurants or meetups or meetings. Usually when i am uninterested i start scrolling the phone without even realizing it.
This year I have been journaling every day and so i jot down the memory of the experience at the end of the day, before it starts fading away, instead of taking photos that will get lost in my digital clutter.
Funny thing about Sunil Grover and Kapil is awhile back they had a huge argument and Kapil gave Sunil a big slap and they didn't speak to each other for 6 years and now they are best of friends. Hope you can take a good chunk of time out from your job to visit all over India, someway, somehow!
Awesome post, Raj! This living in the moment is the best. Butterflies and lizards don't have to work at a job for three quarters of their lives to save up for retirement. What a joy and a gift to live life in every moment. Instead of moments, one might have days or a full year of happiness and they would probably live longer because happiness extends life, sadness probably shortens it. On The Great American Kapil Show, everyone in the studio audience has to hand over their cellphones and smartphones at the door. (They are given them back after the show.) This is for the benefit of Kapil's guests and Kapil Sir. There are no selfies allowed. This is so the whole gathering is a close and personal meeting among friends. Huge Hindi film actors have said how comfortable they feel on Kapel's show and they always seem like they are having such a great time you, Raj, and your meeting of 4. And as you say, "Nobody picked up their phone."

I didnt know that a the Kapil show. I dont watch the show in full but i do watch the clips. Love that show. Cracks me up every time especially Sunil Grover. Its nice to know they have those rules just like any comedy club i have been to. How can we laugh out loud in the real world if we keep getting interrupted by our virtual world.
